Gardening Season

Gardening Season

Patricia Cummings

One of my favorite perennial flowers is the Bleeding Hea

These days I have to schedule an appointment with my husband, Jim, if I would like him to oil a sewing machine or take a photo. Wouldn't you know? It is gardening season! To date, the Tulips, Bleeding Hearts,  Daffodils, Lily of the Valley, Hyacinth, Lilacs, Periwinkle, and Violets have bloomed again this year. The Iris are just opening and the Peonies will come along shortly after that. All of the flowering bushes such as the Cardinal bush and the Quince bush (which actually yields fruit that can be made into jam) have blossomed.

For centuries, quilters have taken inspiration from Nature, especially flowers. One of the favorite quilts I ever made is a Sunflowers quilt.

This is a perennial called Centauria which grows in our front yard. This fragile
plant blooms for a short time and the quickly stops blooming, a reminder
of just how short a life can be
